In the interests of protecting their rights and investments and enabling a high level of organisational potential in the user community, libraries and companies founded the association “Goobi. Digitalisieren im Verein” on 17 September 2012. On 13 May 2016, the general meeting at Mannheim University Library decided to change the association’s name to “Kitodo. Key to digital objects” e. V.

At previous general meetings, release management for Kitodo was awarded to the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB).
